For some people, a wedding dance just isn’t a wedding dance without some classic “participation” dances – we all have memories of getting in a circle and doing The Chicken Dance with our loved ones at a big family wedding, right?
These days, there’s a pretty big divide when it comes to these types of songs. Some people consider them ‘cheesy’, and make it clear that they don’t want them played at their wedding. Others still consider them staple song choices for any event, and feel that their wedding wouldn’t be the same without them! So – which side of the debate has it right? Well… both! Let us explain.
First – let’s call a spade a spade. I think it’s safe to say that songs like the YMCA and the Grease Megamix are cheesy. But does that mean you shouldn’t include them at your wedding? No way!! Songs and traditions become cheesy because they have been played a million times (and counting!), but the same thing that makes them cheesy is what makes them enjoyable – they are familiar. When people hear the first few bars of one of these songs, they know exactly what it is and what to do. Some people roll their eyes, and some people run to the dance floor – and some people do both! Familiarity gets people on the dance floor, and songs that invoke memories have a special place in peoples’ hearts, whether they’re cheesy or not.
So, should you include participation dances or not? It’s totally up to you! We are here to make your wedding music suit you perfectly, and we’re happy to include or exclude whatever music you’d like. But if you are going to include some participation dances, here are a few crowd favourites to consider – and you might just see us doing the actions behind the turntables too!
